Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI)

Soil reaction influence the structural behavior under external loading but also vice versa, the motion of the structure can affect the soil behavior (dynamic of the SSI). The SSI can be simplified on the design phase by means of springs (transitional, rotational, and torsional) and dashpot or by a more accurate analysis with Finite element method. Dynamic SSI is related to flexible structure under cyclic loading which may change the soil behavior during their lifetime and, therefore change the structural response (natural frequencies, damping and stress redistribution). The accurate evolution of the dynamic SSI on the long term is still a challenge.
